Discover more about Tsehlanyane national park

Tsehlanyane National Park, located in the northern part of Lesotho, is a protected area known for its exceptional natural beauty and biodiversity. Established in 1993, the park covers approximately 5,200 hectares (12,857 acres) of rugged terrain in the Maloti Mountains. Its name, derived from the Sesotho word for berg bamboo (Thamnocalamus tessellatus), reflects the park's importance as a refuge for this endemic plant. The park's landscape is characterized by steep mountains, rolling hills, and deep valleys, with altitudes ranging from 1,940 to 3,112 meters (6,365 to 10,210 feet) above sea level. This varied topography creates diverse habitats, supporting a wide array of plant and animal life. Tsehlanyane is particularly renowned for preserving one of Lesotho's last indigenous forests, featuring species like ouhout (Leucosidea sericea) and the iconic berg bamboo. The park offers a variety of activities for nature enthusiasts, including hiking, birdwatching, and Basotho pony rides. Several well-maintained hiking trails cater to different skill levels, providing access to stunning viewpoints, waterfalls, and natural pools. Birdwatchers can spot over 200 recorded bird species, including the rare Maloti thrush and Cape vulture. Culturally, the park is located in an area rich in Basotho heritage, with opportunities to learn about local customs and crafts in nearby villages. Tsehlanyane forms part of the larger Maloti-Drakensberg Transfrontier Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that encompasses protected areas in both Lesotho and South Africa, further enhancing biodiversity conservation. Whether seeking challenging hikes, peaceful nature walks, or cultural immersion, Tsehlanyane National Park offers an unforgettable experience in the heart of Lesotho's highlands.
