Discover more about Abbey of Saint Gall

The Abbey of Saint Gall, located in the city of St. Gallen in northeastern Switzerland, is a captivating blend of Baroque splendor and ancient monastic tradition. The abbey's story began around 612 AD when Saint Gall, an Irish monk, established a hermitage in the Steinach valley. A Benedictine abbey developed a century later, becoming a significant religious, economic, and cultural hub by 800 AD. From the 8th century until its secularization in 1805, the Abbey of Saint Gall was one of Europe's most important cultural centers. The complex served as a Carolingian monastery and, between the 9th and 13th centuries, functioned as an independent principality. The abbey's library is one of the oldest and most important monastic libraries in the world. It houses almost 160,000 volumes, including 2,100 manuscripts dating back to the 8th through 15th centuries. The library's collection includes early medieval books, Irish, Carolingian, and Ottonian artifacts. The abbey complex features the Abbey Library, Vaulted Cellar, and Exhibition Space. The Abbey Cathedral, completed in 1766, is a late Baroque masterpiece with eastern and western rotundas framing the nave and chancel. The cathedral's light-filled interior features a baptismal font reflecting the frescoed ceiling, vault paintings by Josef Wannenmacher, and stucco works by the Gigl brothers. The towers are 68 meters high and house historic bells. The abbey was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
