Tonhalle St. Gallen: A Jewel of Art Nouveau

Experience world-class music and stunning Art Nouveau architecture at the Tonhalle St. Gallen, a cultural gem in the heart of Switzerland.

4.5

The Tonhalle St. Gallen, located on Museumstrasse 25, is a cultural and architectural highlight in St. Gallen. Situated at the intersection of the old town and museum district, this concert hall has been celebrated as the most beautiful in the Lake Constance region. Constructed between 1906 and 1909, the Tonhalle showcases an Art Nouveau style with Baroque elements. A key feature is its revolutionary iron concrete skeleton, designed by Robert Maillart. The hall has a rich history, having hosted renowned orchestras and conductors like Arthur Nikisch, Richard Strauss, and Arturo Toscanini. Othmar Schoeck served as the conductor of symphony concerts from 1917 to 1944. Throughout the 20th century, the Tonhalle played various roles, including serving as a temporary military hospital during World War I. Despite facing challenges like heating bans during both World Wars, it remained a significant venue. A major renovation in the early 1990s expanded the stage and improved facilities, reopening in May 1993. Today, the Tonhalle continues to host a variety of events, including classical concerts, cabaret, jazz performances, banquets, and conferences.
