Explore the Scenic Bar Island Land Bridge

Getting There

• Walking

  If you're starting from the center of Bar Harbor, head towards the waterfront area. Walk along Main Street until you reach the intersection with West Street. Turn left onto West Street and continue walking until you reach the end of the road, where you'll see the Bar Harbor Town Pier. From there, you can see Bar Island directly in front of you. The Bar Island Land Bridge is only accessible during low tide, so make sure to check the tide schedule before you set off. Once at the pier, simply walk across the land bridge to Bar Island, taking in the views of the harbor as you go. The walk across the bridge itself is about 0.5 miles long.

• Bicycle

  If you have a bicycle, you can take a scenic route from the Bar Harbor Village Green. Start by heading southeast on Mount Desert Street towards West Street. Turn left onto West Street and follow it to the Town Pier. This route is approximately 1 mile. Once you arrive at the pier, you can park your bike in the designated area and walk across the Bar Island Land Bridge, which is accessible only during low tide. Enjoy the ride and the beautiful views along the way!

• Hiking

  For those eager to hike, you can start from the Bar Island Trailhead located off of the intersection of West Street and Bar Island Trail. This trail begins with a gentle ascent that leads you to the land bridge. Follow the trail signs, and prepare for a short hike of about 0.5 miles before reaching the land bridge. Make sure to check the tide schedule, as the land bridge is exposed only during low tide. Once you reach the bridge, cross over to Bar Island and explore the beautiful landscapes.
