Discover more about Post of Castile

The Post of Castile, known locally as Il-Prexxa, is a significant historical landmark located in Birgu (Vittoriosa), Malta. Originally constructed in 1553, this eastern defensive stronghold formed a crucial part of Birgu's fortifications. Its name pays homage to the Langue of Castille, a division of the Spanish Knights Hospitaller who were responsible for its initial construction. The Post of Castile gained enduring fame during the Great Siege of 1565, withstanding heavy attacks from Ottoman forces. The fort's strategic isolation was ensured by a surrounding hornwork. A defensive ditch added an extra layer of protection, while caponiers atop the structure shielded knights and soldiers from enemy fire. Inside, a tunnel provided swift movement and communication during sieges, and storage facilities ensured a steady ammunition supply. In the 18th century, the fortifications underwent rebuilding by French architect Charles François de Mondion. During World War II, the Post of Castile's tunnel and storage areas served as an air-raid shelter for Birgu citizens. Today, visitors can explore the landmark, appreciating its architecture and the picturesque views of the surrounding harbor. The area's cobblestone streets, cafes, and shops enhance the experience, offering a glimpse into the local lifestyle.
