The Lower Barrakka Gardens, situated on St. Christopher's Bastion in Valletta, Malta, provide a serene escape with breathtaking views of the Grand Harbour. These gardens, dating back to the 17th century, offer a blend of history, nature, and stunning vistas. Originally constructed as a recreation area, the gardens provided respite for city residents and the Knights of St. John. The gardens feature pathways adorned with flowers, statues, and fountains, inviting visitors to stroll and contemplate. The most prominent monument is the neoclassical temple dedicated to Sir Alexander Ball, a key figure in Malta's transition to British rule. Other monuments commemorate significant events, such as the 50th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution. From the gardens, one can see Fort Ricasoli, Fort St. Angelo, and the Siege Bell Memorial. The Siege Bell Memorial commemorates the 7,000 service personnel and civilians who lost their lives during the Siege of Malta in World War II. The bell chimes daily at noon in their memory. The gardens also offer views of the creeks of Birgu and Kalkara. The Lower Barrakka Gardens are open to the public from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily and admission is free. A snack bar is located just outside the gardens.
