Discover more about Dwejra Inland Sea

The Dwejra Inland Sea, or Il-Qawra in Maltese, is a stunning lagoon located on the west coast of Gozo. It was formed millions of years ago when a sea cave, created by a geological fault in the limestone, collapsed. This collapse left a deep, circular depression that filled with seawater, creating the unique inland sea. The lagoon is connected to the open Mediterranean Sea by an 80-meter-long natural tunnel, L-Ghar tad-Dwejra. This tunnel is a popular spot for divers, snorkelers, and boat tours, offering a glimpse into the vibrant underwater world. The surrounding cliffs provide a dramatic backdrop, adding to the area's rugged beauty. On one side of the Inland Sea, there is a gently sloping pebble beach with several traditional fishermen's huts. These huts add to the charm of the area, and the fishermen often offer boat trips through the tunnel and along the coast. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities at the Inland Sea, including swimming in the calm, shallow waters, exploring the coastline, taking a boat tour, or diving in the deeper waters of the tunnel and open sea. Nearby attractions include the Blue Hole, Fungus Rock, and the Dwejra Tower, offering even more to explore in this fascinating corner of Gozo. Though the Azure Window collapsed in 2017, the underwater remains have become a popular dive site.
