Discover more about Foso e Interior Citadelle De Victoria

The Foso e Interior Citadelle De Victoria, also known as the Citadel or Ċittadella, is a prominent historical site in Victoria, Gozo. Rising dramatically above the city, it has been a central point of activity on the island since Neolithic times and was fortified around 1500 BC during the Bronze Age. Developed further by the Phoenicians and Romans, it became a complex acropolis. During the medieval period, the acropolis was converted into a castle to shelter Gozo's population. Until 1637, Gozitans were required to spend their nights within the Citadel for safety. In 1551, the Citadel was sacked by Ottoman forces, leading to its reconstruction between 1599 and 1622, transforming it into a gunpowder fortress. Today, the northern walls retain their medieval form, while the southern walls reflect the 17th-century reconstruction. Inside the Citadel, visitors can explore various historical structures, including the Cathedral of the Assumption, built between 1697 and 1711. Museums such as the Gozo Museum of Archaeology and the Folklore Museum showcase the island's cultural heritage. The Citadel also offers panoramic views of Gozo, making it a must-see for history buffs and sightseers alike.
