Discover more about Fungus Rock

Fungus Rock, known locally as Il-Ġebla tal-Ġeneral (The General's Rock), is a towering limestone formation that marks the entrance to the Dwejra Bay lagoon on the island of Gozo. Rising dramatically from the azure Mediterranean Sea, this 60-meter-high islet is a prominent landmark with a captivating history. Its name derives from a plant, *Cynomorium coccineum*, mistakenly believed to be a fungus, which the Knights Hospitaller (Knights of St. John) highly valued for its supposed medicinal properties. This "Maltese Fungus" was thought to cure everything from dysentery and anemia to erectile dysfunction and wounds. So valuable was this resource that in 1746, Grand Master Pinto declared the rock off-limits. Trespassers risked three years as oarsmen in the Knights' galleys. He even ordered the sides of the rock smoothed to prevent climbing and installed a cable-car basket system to transport the plant to the mainland. Dwejra Tower was erected nearby to guard the islet. Today, Fungus Rock is a protected nature reserve. While the medicinal myths surrounding the "Maltese Fungus" have been debunked, the rock remains a fascinating testament to Gozo's natural beauty and unique history. Although access to the rock itself is prohibited, the surrounding shoreline is open to visitors, offering opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, and diving in the clear waters. Divers can explore the underwater caves and observe the diverse marine life around the rock. From the shore, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Fungus Rock, especially during the early morning or late afternoon when the light enhances its dramatic cliffs.
