Dwejra Tower: Sentinel of Gozo's Coast

Explore Gozo's historic Dwejra Tower: panoramic views, rich history, and stunning natural beauty await in this coastal sentinel's embrace.

4.5

Perched on the dramatic western cliffs of Gozo, Malta, Dwejra Tower is a compelling historical landmark offering stunning views and a glimpse into the island's past. Constructed in 1652 during the reign of Grand Master Giovanni Paolo Lascaris, the tower formed part of a network of coastal defenses designed to protect Gozo from corsair raids. Its strategic location allowed for communication with other watchtowers via fire and smoke signals, providing early warnings of approaching threats. Originally funded by the Gozo Municipality, the tower was equipped with cannons and manned by guards responsible for monitoring the seas. The tower also played a role in guarding Fungus Rock, a small islet known for a unique plant believed to have medicinal properties. The plant, *Cynomorium coccineum*, was highly valued, and access to the rock was restricted to protect it. Over the centuries, Dwejra Tower served various purposes, including a deterrent against smuggling and a quarantine enforcement point during British rule. It was even manned during both World Wars as an observation post. However, by the late 20th century, the tower had fallen into disrepair. In 1997, Din l-Art Ħelwa, a Maltese heritage NGO, leased the tower and undertook extensive restoration work. Today, Dwejra Tower stands as a testament to successful heritage conservation and is open to the public. Visitors can explore the tower's interior, learn about its history, and enjoy panoramic views of the Dwejra Heritage Park, including the Inland Sea, Fungus Rock, and the site of the former Azure Window. The tower is within a Natura 2000 site, a haven for geology and ecology enthusiasts. As a designated Dark Sky Heritage Area, Dwejra offers incredible views of the Milky Way.
