Discover more about Cittadella Gozo

Cittadella, standing proudly on a hilltop in the heart of Gozo, is a testament to the island's layered history. This ancient fortified city, also known as the Citadel, has been at the center of Gozitan life since Neolithic times. Fortified during the Bronze Age around 1500 BC, it evolved through Phoenician and Roman eras, serving as the acropolis of the Punic-Roman city of Gaulos. During the medieval period, the Cittadella transformed into a castle, providing refuge for Gozitans during Ottoman and Barbary attacks. A devastating raid in 1551 saw most of Gozo's population taken into slavery. Rebuilt by the Knights of St. John between 1599 and 1603, the Cittadella became a purely military outpost. Until 1637, Gozo's entire population was required to spend the night within its walls. Today, the Cittadella is a car-free zone, offering visitors a step back in time. Its narrow streets lead to historical buildings, museums, and the magnificent baroque Cathedral of the Assumption, designed by Maltese architect Lorenzo Gafa. The Cittadella offers panoramic views of Gozo, showcasing the island's natural beauty. Key attractions include the Cittadella Visitors' Centre, the Gozo Museum of Archaeology, the Gran Castello Historic House (Folklore Museum), the Gozo Nature Museum, and the Old Prison.
