The Bażilika Santwarju tal-Madonna tal-Karmnu (Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel) is a significant Roman Catholic church in Valletta, Malta, easily recognizable by its enormous oval dome. The dome, standing 42 meters high, is a dominant feature of Valletta's skyline, visible from across the Marsamxett Harbour. The basilica forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage site that encompasses the entire city. The original church on this site was built around 1570, designed by Girolamo Cassar, and dedicated to the Annunciation. In the 17th century, it was entrusted to the Carmelites and rededicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The façade was later redesigned in 1852 by Giuseppe Bonavia. Pope Leo XIII elevated the church to the rank of Minor Basilica in 1895. During World War II, the basilica suffered extensive damage and was rebuilt between 1958 and 1981. Consecrated in 1981, the present church showcases a neoclassical architectural style. Inside, red marble columns and a 17th-century painting of Our Lady of Mount Carmel are particularly striking. The interior was sculpted over 19 years by Joseph Damato. The church is open to visitors and continues to hold regular services.
