Ponsonby's Column: A Tribute to Valletta's Heritage

Getting There

• Walking

  If you are already in Marsamxett Harbour, the easiest way to reach Ponsonby's Column is to walk. Start from the waterfront promenade and head towards the city of Valletta. Follow the signs leading to Valletta. As you approach the entrance to Valletta, you will find yourself at City Gate. Continue walking straight ahead, passing through Republic Street. After approximately 15-20 minutes of walking, you will reach the Upper Barracca Gardens. From there, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities. Ponsonby's Column is a short walk from the gardens; simply exit the gardens, turn left, and walk along the edge of the Upper Barracca until you see the column ahead. It should take around 5 minutes.

• Public Transportation (Bus)

  You can take a bus from Marsamxett Harbour to Valletta. Board the bus number 133 or any bus heading towards Valletta. The bus stop is located near the water's edge. The journey should take about 10-15 minutes, depending on traffic. Once you arrive at the Valletta bus terminus, exit the bus and walk towards City Gate. From there, follow Republic Street to Upper Barracca Gardens and then proceed as described for walking. The total travel time, including the bus ride and walking, is approximately 30 minutes. A single bus ticket costs around €1.50.

• Taxi

  If you prefer a more direct route, you can take a taxi from Marsamxett Harbour to Ponsonby's Column. Taxis can be found near the waterfront or can be booked via a taxi app. The drive will take around 5-10 minutes, depending on traffic conditions. Make sure to mention 'Ponsonby's Column in Valletta' to the driver. The estimated fare should be around €10-€15, depending on the time of day and traffic.
