Getting There

• Car

  If you are driving from the Antietam National Battlefield Visitor Center, head southeast on MD-65 S (Sharpsburg Pike) for about 3 miles. Turn right onto W Main St and continue for approximately 1 mile. Turn left onto MD-34 S, and after about 2 miles, turn right onto the C&O Canal National Historic Park entrance. Follow the signs to Big Slackwater Viewpoint, which is located near Williamsport, MD 21795.

• Public Transportation

  If you are using public transportation, first take a local bus to Hagerstown. From Hagerstown, you may need to use a rideshare service (like Uber or Lyft) to reach the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historic Park entrance. Once you arrive at the park entrance, follow the signs to Big Slackwater Viewpoint, which is approximately a 10-minute walk from the entrance.

• Bicycle

  For those who prefer cycling, you can rent a bicycle in Sharpsburg or Hagerstown. From the Antietam National Battlefield, take the scenic route along the C&O Canal towpath, which leads directly to the Big Slackwater Viewpoint. The ride is approximately 7 miles and offers beautiful views of the canal and surrounding nature.

• Walking

  If you are already within the park and prefer to walk, you can hike along the C&O Canal. From any point in the park, follow the path toward the Big Slackwater area, which is marked. The distance may vary based on your starting point, but it typically takes about 30-45 minutes to reach the viewpoint on foot, depending on your pace.
