Brockton, originally known as North Bridgewater, was settled in 1700 as part of the larger Bridgewater township. It was officially incorporated as a separate town in 1821. The name 'Brockton' was adopted in 1874, in honor of Isaac Brock, a British Army officer and colonial administrator.
