History of Mount Pleasant

  • Before European settlers arrived, the area known today as Mount Pleasant was home to the Anishinaabe people, particularly the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi tribes. These tribes formed a loose confederation known as the Council of Three Fires. They lived off the land, hunting, fishing, and farming, and their rich cultural heritage still influences the region today.

  • The Treaty of 1855 between the United States government and the Anishinaabe tribes led to the establishment of the Isabella Indian Reservation in the area. This treaty was part of a series of agreements that aimed to relocate Native Americans to specific areas and open up their lands for European-American settlement.

  • Mount Pleasant was officially founded in 1860 and named by David Ward, a prominent lumberman who saw great potential in the area's abundant natural resources. The city's location along the Chippewa River made it an ideal spot for milling and trade, quickly attracting settlers and businesses.

  • In the 1920s, Mount Pleasant experienced a significant economic boom due to the discovery of oil in the area. The oil industry attracted many workers and businesses, transforming the local economy and landscape. This period of prosperity helped establish Mount Pleasant as a key economic hub in the region.

  • Central Michigan University (CMU) was founded in 1892 as the Central Michigan Normal School and Business Institute. Originally established to train teachers, CMU has grown into one of the largest universities in Michigan. Its presence has had a profound impact on the city, contributing to its cultural, educational, and economic development.

  • Opened in 1998, the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort is owned and operated by the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Nation. It has become one of the largest and most successful casinos in the Midwest, providing significant revenue and employment opportunities for the tribe and contributing to the local economy.

  • Mount Pleasant hosts a variety of cultural festivals and events that celebrate its rich history and diverse community. The annual Ziibiwing Center Pow Wow highlights Native American culture, while the Central Michigan University International Film Festival showcases global cinema.
