If you are driving from any location within Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, head towards M-22 North. Once you reach M-22, turn left (north) and continue for about 10 miles until you reach Leland. In Leland, turn left onto N Manitou Trail (also known as CR-651). Whaleback Natural Area will be on your right at 1639 N Manitou Trail. Look for a small parking area where you can safely park your vehicle.

Currently, there are limited public transportation options available in the Sleeping Bear Dunes area. However, the Leelanau Transit Corporation operates a bus service that connects towns in the region. You can catch the bus from Glen Arbor to Leland. Once you arrive in Leland, you will need to walk or arrange for a taxi to take you to Whaleback Natural Area, which is about a 1.5-mile distance from the bus stop. Be sure to check the bus schedule in advance for any specific routes and times.

If you prefer biking, you can bike from any location within Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Use the scenic trails that connect to M-22 North. Once you reach M-22, head north toward Leland. Upon reaching Leland, turn left onto N Manitou Trail. The ride to Whaleback Natural Area offers beautiful views, but please be cautious as you will be sharing the road with vehicles. Ensure that you wear a helmet and follow local biking regulations.
