History of Rochester

Dakota Land and Early Settlement

The Rochester area lies within the traditional homeland of the Dakota people, whose seasonal movement, hunting and trading networks were connected to the region's rivers, prairies and woodlands. Euro-American settlement expanded in the mid-nineteenth century after treaties and the opening of lands to settlers, a process that displaced Indigenous communities and reshaped the landscape. George Head is generally credited with founding Rochester in 1854, naming it after Rochester, New York. The settlement grew around the Zumbro River and the fertile agricultural country of Olmsted County, while roads and civic institutions established the framework of the town that would become south-eastern Minnesota's principal regional centre.

County Seat and Railroad Town

Rochester became the seat of Olmsted County in 1855, strengthening its role as a centre for government, commerce and farming services. The arrival of the railway in the 1860s connected the growing town with wider markets and encouraged the movement of people, livestock, grain and manufactured goods. Main Street businesses, churches, schools and civic buildings followed, while surrounding farms supplied the town's economy. The 1883 Tornado and Medical Beginnings

A devastating tornado struck Rochester on 21 August 1883, killing dozens and injuring hundreds. The disaster prompted local residents to seek organised medical assistance, and William Worrall Mayo and his sons, William James Mayo and Charles Horace Mayo, became central to the response. The Sisters of Saint Francis later helped establish Saint Marys Hospital, which opened in 1889.
