4.3

The Battle of Carthage State Historic Site preserves a portion of the land where one of the earliest full-scale battles of the American Civil War took place. On July 5, 1861, the Missouri State Guard, led by pro-Southern Governor Claiborne Fox Jackson, clashed with Union forces commanded by Colonel Franz Sigel. Though the battle resulted in a Confederate victory, it was a morale boost for the South and propelled Colonel Sigel to national attention. The 7.4-acre site encompasses the Carter Spring area, a natural spring and meadow that served as an encampment for both armies. Today, the area remains largely unchanged from its 1861 appearance. Visitors can walk the grounds, explore the interpretive kiosk detailing the battle's events, and reflect on this significant moment in American history. A short hiking trail, the Carter Spring Trail (also referred to as James Spring Trail), allows visitors to explore the area surrounding the spring. The Battle of Carthage State Historic Site offers a serene setting to learn about the complexities of the Civil War in Missouri. It's a place where history and nature converge, providing a space for education and remembrance.
