Discover more about Scott Joplin House State Historic Site

The Scott Joplin House State Historic Site, located at 2658 Delmar Boulevard in St. Louis, Missouri, preserves the legacy of Scott Joplin, one of the most influential composers of ragtime music. From 1901 to 1903, Joplin resided in this modest flat, where he composed some of his most celebrated works, including 'The Entertainer'. The site comprises a two-story brick house, typical of tenant rowhouses built in the city around 1860. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources maintains the house and its surroundings as a state historic site. Inside, the flat is furnished in a style befitting the period, featuring gaslights, calcimine paint, and antique furnishings that recreate Joplin's living environment. Although none of the furnishings are known to have been owned by Joplin, they are all period-correct. A visit to the Scott Joplin House offers an immersive experience into the world of ragtime. Guests can tour the flat, explore museum exhibits detailing Joplin's life and the history of the neighborhood, and listen to ragtime music on a working player piano. The site also provides historical context of Scott Joplin’s neighborhood to understand the landscape history. The site is the first state historic site in Missouri dedicated to African-American heritage.
