Discover more about Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic Site

The Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic Site, located in Pilot Knob, Missouri, preserves the site of a significant Civil War battle. In September 1864, Confederate General Sterling Price led an army of 8,000 men against the Union post of Fort Davidson. The Union force, numbering around 1,500 troops, was commanded by Brigadier General Thomas Ewing Jr. The Confederate forces suffered heavy losses in a series of infantry assaults. Although the Union troops evacuated the fort, they slowed Price's advance, giving Union forces more time to prepare defenses. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved historic site, including the remnants of Fort Davidson. The visitor center features exhibits, artifacts, and audiovisual presentations that tell the story of the battle and its context within the Civil War. A fiber optics diorama depicts the battle. Visitors can also see Civil War-era rifles, cannons, and other items. The site also offers a playground, picnic area, and hiking trail. The site was renamed Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic Site in 2014, on the sesquicentennial of the battle.
