Tighina Fortress, also called Bender Fortress, is a significant historical monument located in Bender, Moldova, on the right bank of the Dniester River. The fortress dates back to the 15th century when it was initially constructed from earth and wood under the rule of Prince Stephen the Great. In 1538, the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent conquered it and ordered its reconstruction in stone, transforming it into a formidable military outpost. The renowned architect Sinan contributed to its redesign and expansion. Over the centuries, the fortress has been a strategic point in numerous conflicts, witnessing sieges by Moldavian, Russian, and Swedish forces. It played a central role in the Russo-Turkish wars and even served as a refuge for the Swedish King Charles XII after the Battle of Poltava. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved and partially restored citadel, featuring museums and historical reconstructions. The fortress complex includes a history museum with artifacts and exhibits that highlight the cultural significance of the area. In November 2012, a Museum of Medieval Instruments of Torture opened, showcasing examples of torture devices.
