Muzeul Cetății, located inside the Bender Fortress, provides a unique window into Moldova's rich and often turbulent history. The museum's exhibits are primarily focused on the history of the region during the Ottoman Empire. The displays feature a diverse collection of artifacts and documents found during excavations, as well as items donated by local residents, many of which have been preserved within families for generations. The museum is housed within the old Turkish powder magazine, the only Turkish building preserved in the fortress. The exhibit is arranged chronologically, starting from the earliest days of the fortress and moving through the Ukrainian-Swedish and Turkish periods. A significant portion of the museum is dedicated to the Moldovan principality and the Russo-Turkish wars. Key exhibits include collections of edged weapons, Moldovan ceramics, royal coins, and banknotes. Visitors can also view cannonballs, musket bullets, and a 10th-century forged cauldron. Dioramas depict important events, such as the camp of the Swedish King Charles XII and the assault on the Bender Fortress by Russian troops in 1770. The museum also features mannequins dressed as a Swedish drabant (member of King Charles XII's personal guard) and a Janissary. Beyond the artifacts, the museum offers insight into local traditions and the cultural heritage of Moldova. Knowledgeable staff are available to answer questions and provide context, enhancing the visitor experience.
