Tighina Fortress, also called Bender Fortress, is a historical landmark located in Bender, Moldova, on the right bank of the Dniester River. The fortress dates back to the 15th century when it was initially constructed from earth and wood during the reign of Prince Stephen the Great. In 1538, the fortress was conquered by the Turkish Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, who ordered its reconstruction in stone, transforming it into a formidable Ottoman stronghold. The architect Sinan oversaw the reconstruction, which was completed in 1541. Over the centuries, Tighina Fortress has been a strategic point of contention, witnessing numerous sieges and changes in power. It served as a military stronghold and even a royal residence. The fortress has been under the control of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic since 1991 and was restored between 2008 and 2012.
