The Transfiguration Cathedral, located on Sovetskaya Street in Bender, is a significant Russian Orthodox church with a rich history. Construction began in 1814, with the first stone laid on August 22, 1815, by Dimitrios, the Archbishop of Chișinău. The cathedral was built to symbolize liberation from Ottoman Turkish rule.The cathedral's construction spanned several years. While consecrated in 1827 by Dimitrios, the bell tower wasn't completed until 1832, and other works finished in 1840. Funds for the completion were raised by allowing the church warden to build shops around the cathedral, turning the area into a trading hub. A 3-tonne bell was added in 1911.The church remained unpainted until the 20th century, with interior painting commencing in 1934 by Moldovan artist Alexandru Plamadeala and his apprentices. Many of Plamadeala's frescoes, including "Constantine", "Helena", and images of the 12 apostles, are still preserved today.The cathedral suffered significant damage during the Great Patriotic War, including the destruction of the iconostasis and the cathedral archive. It was placed under state protection as an architectural monument in 1948 and has since undergone extensive restoration. Celebrations were held in September 2015 to mark its 200th anniversary. Today, the cathedral stands as a testament to the city's history and the enduring spirit of its people.
