Discover more about Stephen the Great Monument

The Stephen the Great Monument stands as a powerful symbol of Moldovan history and national identity. Erected in 1928, the monument commemorates Stephen the Great (Ștefan cel Mare), the Prince of Moldavia from 1457 to 1504, who is celebrated for his successful defense against the Ottoman Empire. Created by sculptor Alexandru Plămădeală, the bronze statue depicts Stephen the Great in regal attire, holding a sword, symbolizing his role as a defender of the principality. The monument has had a tumultuous history, mirroring Moldova's own struggles. In 1940, before the Soviet occupation, it was moved to Vaslui, Romania, and its pedestal was destroyed. It was returned to Chișinău in 1942, only to be taken back to Romania in 1944. In 1945, Soviet authorities ordered its restoration, but it wasn't until 1989 that it was returned to its original location. Today, the monument is a central gathering place in Chișinău, used for public celebrations, commemorations, and flower-laying ceremonies during national holidays and official visits. It is located at the intersection of one of the main alleys with the boulevards Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt and Grigore Vieru. The monument is not only a tribute to a historical figure but also a reminder of Moldova's enduring spirit.
