From Tiraspol, take a bus or minibus to Bender. Buses depart frequently from Tiraspol's central bus station. The fare is approximately 5-10 MDL. From Bender's central bus station, you can walk to the fortress (about 20 minutes) or take a local taxi for around 30 MDL. Trolleybus #19 also runs from Tiraspol to Bender. Cash and transport cards are accepted for public transit in Bender.

Tighina Fortress, a historical complex also known as Bender Fortress, is situated on the right bank of the Dniester River in Bender, Moldova. Its origins trace back to the 15th century when it was constructed from earth and wood under Prince Stephen the Great. In 1538, the fortress was conquered by the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, who ordered its reconstruction in stone, transforming it into a formidable military stronghold. The fortress was renamed Bender, a Turkish word meaning 'river port'.Over the centuries, Tighina Fortress has been a strategic point in numerous conflicts, serving as a key military outpost for the Ottoman Empire and a frequent target for Moldavian, Russian, and Swedish forces. The renowned architect Sinan redesigned and expanded the fortress, adding bastions, towers, and deep defensive ditches. Today, the partially restored citadel offers visitors a chance to explore its well-preserved architecture, including museums and historical reconstructions. Inside the fortress, visitors can explore the outer and inner courtyards and museums. Climb the walls and towers for scenic views. The inner courtyard often hosts summer concerts, theater productions, and movie viewings. The historical museum displays artifacts from the Ottoman past and the Swedish King Charles XII's time there. A unique monument pays tribute to Baron Münchhausen, who, according to legend, spied on the fortress by 'flying around it on a cannonball'.
