St. Charles Church: A Monte Carlo Landmark

St. Charles Church, or Église Saint-Charles, is a prominent landmark in Monte Carlo, Monaco. Prince Charles III commissioned its construction in the late 19th century to accommodate Monte Carlo's growing population, replacing the former St. Lawrence Chapel. The cornerstone was laid in 1879, and the church was completed in 1883. The church's dedication to St. Charles Borromeo highlights the historical ties between the Borromeo and Grimaldi families.Designed by architect Charles Lenormand in the French Renaissance style, the church is built in the shape of a Latin cross. Its facade features a bell tower rising 30 meters. Inside, nineteen stained glass windows illuminate the nave. The interior also features a gilded wooden altar with cabled columns, statues of saints, and sculpted images of Christ.
