Discover more about Palais de Justice

The Palais de Justice, located on the Place du Palais de Justice in Nice's Old Town, is more than just a courthouse; it's a piece of the city's history. Constructed between 1890 and 1892, the building stands on the site of a former Dominican convent. Designed by departmental architect Auguste-Vincent Dieudé-Defly, the Palais showcases a neoclassical architectural style, a testament to the era in which it was built. For over 130 years, the Palais de Justice has been a fixture on one of Nice's busiest squares. The square itself is one of the oldest in the 'modern' part of Vieux-Nice, laid out after the destruction of the Saint-Eloi gate during the revolution. Today, the Palais is surrounded by restaurant terraces and is next to the Tour de l'Horloge (Clock Tower). Inside, a grand staircase complements the building's imposing facade. While primarily a working courthouse, the Palais de Justice offers a glimpse into the French judicial system. Although the interior is not generally open to the public, its exterior provides an impressive architectural sight. The Place du Palais de Justice also hosts a book market on the first and third Saturdays of each month, adding to the square's vibrant atmosphere.
