Getting There

  If you are traveling by car from the nearest major town in Dolpo, which is Juphal, first head towards the Juphal airport. From Juphal, take the road leading to Dunai, which is approximately 30 minutes away. After reaching Dunai, continue on the path that follows the banks of the Thuli Bheri River towards the village of Sulighat. From Sulighat, you will need to trek for about 3-4 hours to reach the entrance of the Shey Phoksundo National Park. Once inside the park, follow the marked trails for another 2-3 hours to finally arrive at Phoksundo Lake. Make sure to have appropriate trekking permits, which can be arranged in Dunai.

• Public Transportation

  To reach Phoksundo Lake using public transportation, begin your journey in the town of Juphal. Look for local jeep services that travel regularly to Dunai. The ride takes about 30 minutes. Once in Dunai, you will need to hire a local guide or check for shared jeep services heading towards Sulighat. From Sulighat, prepare for a trek of around 3-4 hours to the entrance of Shey Phoksundo National Park, and then another 2-3 hours of trekking to reach the lake itself. Ensure that you have acquired the necessary trekking permits before starting your journey.

  For those who are already in the Dolpo region and prefer to trek directly to Phoksundo Lake, start your trek from Dunai, which is accessible by car or jeep. The trek will take roughly 5-7 hours, depending on your pace. Follow the trail along the Thuli Bheri River, passing through charming villages and lush landscapes. This route is well-marked and offers stunning views. Be sure to carry enough food and water, as facilities may be sparse along the way. It is advisable to hire a local guide to enhance your experience and ensure you stay on the right path.
