Zwolle was officially founded on August 31, 1230, when it was granted city rights by the Bishop of Utrecht. The city's location at the confluence of the rivers IJssel and Zwarte Water made it a strategic and economically significant site from its inception.

In the 14th century, Zwolle became a prominent member of the Hanseatic League, a powerful economic and defensive alliance of merchant guilds and market towns in Northwestern and Central Europe.
