Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, start from the main city in Northland, Whangarei. Head north on State Highway 1 (SH1) for approximately 2 hours until you reach the town of Kaitaia. From Kaitaia, follow State Highway 1 north towards the Cape Reinga turn-off. After about 30 minutes, you'll see signs directing you to Cape Reinga. Turn onto Cape Reinga Road and follow it for about 30 minutes until you reach the Cape Reinga lighthouse. Note that parking is available near the lighthouse, but it can fill up during peak tourist seasons.

• Public Transportation

  For those using public transportation, take a bus from Whangarei to Kaitaia. The bus service operates regularly, but check the latest schedules on the bus company's website. Once you arrive in Kaitaia, you will need to transfer to a shuttle service that goes directly to Cape Reinga. The shuttle services typically require advance booking, and the trip to the lighthouse takes about 1 hour. Be sure to confirm the pick-up and drop-off times to ensure a smooth journey.

  Once you arrive at Cape Reinga, you will need to walk approximately 10 minutes from the parking lot to reach the Cape Marie van Diemen Lighthouse. The path is well-marked and offers stunning views of the coastline. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for varying weather conditions.

• Costs

  If you are taking the shuttle from Kaitaia to Cape Reinga, expect to pay around NZD 60 to NZD 80 for a round trip. If you are driving, ensure you have enough fuel as there are limited service stations along the way, and it's a scenic route where you will want to stop and enjoy the views.
