If you're traveling by car, start your journey from Whangarei, which is approximately 2 hours away from Tane Mahuta. Head north on State Highway 1 (SH1) and follow the signs for Kaikohe. In Kaikohe, take the turnoff onto State Highway 12 (SH12) towards Opononi and Omapere. Continue on SH12, and after about 30 minutes, you will see the signs for Waipoua Forest. Once you enter the forest area, look for the Tane Mahuta car park on your right. The car park is free of charge, and from there, it's a short walk to the giant kauri tree.

For those using public transportation, take a bus from Whangarei to Kaikohe. The bus service, operated by InterCity or local providers, typically runs a few times daily. The journey will take around 1.5 hours. Once in Kaikohe, you will need to arrange for a shuttle or taxi service to Waipoua Forest. Make sure to book this in advance as services can be limited. The shuttle ride will take approximately 30 minutes. Confirm the shuttle costs with the provider, as they can vary.
