Car
If you're traveling by car, start your journey from Invercargill, which is approximately 2 hours (140 km) away from the Westernmost Point of the South Island. Take State Highway 1 (SH1) north from Invercargill toward Gore. After about 30 km, take the exit onto State Highway 96 (SH96) towards Tuatapere. Follow SH96 for about 60 km until you reach the town of Tuatapere. From there, continue onto the Western Southland road, which leads directly to the Westernmost Point. Watch for signs indicating the direction to the Westernmost Point, as they will guide you through the final stretch. The last few kilometers will be on gravel roads, so drive carefully. Note that there are no tolls on this route.

Public Transportation
If you're using public transportation, your best option is to take a bus from Invercargill to Tuatapere. InterCity operates services to Tuatapere which takes approximately 2.5 hours. Once you arrive in Tuatapere, you will need to arrange for a taxi or a shuttle service to cover the remaining 30 km to the Westernmost Point. Be sure to book your taxi in advance as services may be limited. Additionally, confirm the cost of the taxi/shuttle beforehand to avoid surprises. Public bus fares can vary, so check the InterCity website for current pricing.
