Breathtaking Vistas at Thomas Divide Overlook

Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, start by entering the Smoky Mountain National Park through the main entrances: Oconaluftee Visitor Center if coming from Cherokee or Gatlinburg. From the Oconaluftee Visitor Center, follow the Newfound Gap Road (US-441) south until you reach the Blue Ridge Parkway entrance. Merge onto the Blue Ridge Parkway heading south. Continue to drive along the parkway until you reach Milepost 463.9, where you will find the Thomas Divide Overlook. There is no entrance fee for the Blue Ridge Parkway, but be sure to check for any seasonal road closures.

• Public Transportation + Car

  If you are using public transportation, take a bus to the closest town, Cherokee, NC. From the Cherokee transit station, you can either rent a car or use a rideshare service to reach the Blue Ridge Parkway. Once you have a vehicle, follow the same directions as above by heading south on Newfound Gap Road to the Blue Ridge Parkway and then to Milepost 463.9 for the Thomas Divide Overlook. Be aware that renting a car may incur additional costs, typically around $30-$80 per day depending on the vehicle type.

• Bike

  For the adventurous, biking is an option. You can rent a bike in Cherokee and ride towards the Blue Ridge Parkway. The route from Cherokee to the overlook is approximately 10 miles and is a scenic and challenging ride. Make sure to wear a helmet and be prepared for varying terrain. You might need to bike along the Newfound Gap Road before reaching the Blue Ridge Parkway. Be aware that bike rentals usually cost around $20-$40 per day.
