Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, start on US-97 North from Bend, Oregon. Continue on US-97 for approximately 22 miles until you reach the exit for Lava Butte, marked as 'Lava Lands Visitor Center.' Take the exit and follow the signs for Lava Butte. The road will lead you directly to the parking area. Note that there is a parking fee of $5 per vehicle, which can be paid at the kiosk.

• Public Transportation

  For those using public transportation, you can take a bus from Bend to Sunriver via the Cascades East Transit. Once in Sunriver, you will need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service to reach Lava Butte, as public transit does not directly serve the area. Keep in mind that the taxi fare may vary, so check local services for rates. It’s advisable to plan your trip ahead of time, as bus schedules may limit your travel options.

• Biking

  If you are an adventurous traveler, consider biking from Bend to Lava Butte. The distance is about 22 miles, and you can follow the paved bike paths along the way. Once you reach the Lava Lands Visitor Center, follow the signs to Lava Butte. Ensure you have a bike lock, and remember to bring plenty of water and snacks for the ride!

• Walking/Hiking

  For those who are particularly enthusiastic about hiking, you can park at the Lava Lands Visitor Center and hike the Lava Butte Trail. The trail is approximately 1 mile long and leads up to the summit of Lava Butte, offering stunning views of the surrounding Cascade Range. Make sure to wear appropriate footwear and bring water, as the trail can be steep in sections.
