After approximately 10 miles, turn left onto Bear Creek Rd (look for signs for John Day Fossil Beds National Monument). Follow Bear Creek Rd for about 7 miles until you reach the Painted Hills Unit, located at 37375 Bear Creek Rd, Mitchell, OR 97750.

From Bend, take US-20 E toward Burns. After about 40 miles, turn left onto US-97 N. Continue on US-97 N for about 34 miles until you reach the town of Redmond. From Redmond, take US-126 E to Prineville. Once in Prineville, follow the directions provided above to reach John Day Fossil Beds National Monument - Painted Hills Unit.
