History of K2 Base Camp

The first recorded sighting of K2, the second-highest mountain in the world, was by the European surveyor Thomas Montgomerie in 1856. During the Great Trigonometric Survey of India, Montgomerie labeled the peak as 'K2' because it was the second peak in the Karakoram range that he identified. The early exploration efforts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries laid the groundwork for future mountaineering attempts on this formidable peak.
One of the most notable early expeditions to K2 was led by the Italian Duke of the Abruzzi, Prince Luigi Amedeo, in 1909. This expedition explored the southeastern ridge of K2, known as the Abruzzi Spur, which would later become the most popular route for climbers attempting to reach the summit. Although the team did not reach the peak, they made significant progress and set a height record of 6,250 meters (20,505 feet).
K2 was first successfully climbed on July 31, 1954, by an Italian team led by Ardito Desio. The climbers who reached the summit were Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli. Their successful ascent via the Abruzzi Spur marked a significant milestone in mountaineering history and brought international attention to K2 Base Camp as a launching point for future expeditions.
