The first recorded sighting of K2, the second-highest mountain in the world, was by the European surveyor Thomas Montgomerie in 1856. During the Great Trigonometric Survey of India, Montgomerie labeled the peak as 'K2' because it was the second peak in the Karakoram range that he identified. The early exploration efforts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries laid the groundwork for future mountaineering attempts on this formidable peak.

One of the most notable early expeditions to K2 was led by the Italian Duke of the Abruzzi, Prince Luigi Amedeo, in 1909. This expedition explored the southeastern ridge of K2, known as the Abruzzi Spur, which would later become the most popular route for climbers attempting to reach the summit. Although the team did not reach the peak, they made significant progress and set a height record of 6,250 meters (20,505 feet).

K2 was first successfully climbed on July 31, 1954, by an Italian team led by Ardito Desio. The climbers who reached the summit were Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli. Their successful ascent via the Abruzzi Spur marked a significant milestone in mountaineering history and brought international attention to K2 Base Camp as a launching point for future expeditions.

K2 has earned the nickname 'Savage Mountain' due to its high fatality rate among climbers. One of the most tragic events occurred in 1986, known as the 'Black Summer,' when 13 climbers lost their lives. Despite its beauty and allure, K2's harsh weather conditions and technical challenges make it one of the most dangerous mountains to climb. These events have shaped the culture and cautionary tales shared among mountaineers at K2 Base Camp.

K2 has also seen significant achievements by female climbers. In 1986, Polish climber Wanda Rutkiewicz became the first woman to reach the summit of K2. Her achievement inspired many other female climbers to take on the challenge of K2. Over the years, numerous women have succeeded in summiting K2, each contributing to the rich history of female mountaineering at the base camp.

K2 Base Camp is located in a region inhabited by various ethnic groups, including the Balti people. The mountain and the surrounding areas hold cultural and spiritual significance for these communities. The Balti people, known for their resilience and mountaineering skills, often work as guides and porters for climbing expeditions. Their deep connection to the land and their cultural heritage add a rich, human dimension to the history of K2 Base Camp.

In recent years, advancements in mountaineering technology and techniques have made K2 more accessible, yet it remains a formidable challenge. Modern expeditions often use GPS, satellite phones, and improved climbing gear. Despite these advancements, the spirit of adventure and the respect for the mountain's power and unpredictability remain unchanged. Today's climbers continue to gather at K2 Base Camp, following in the footsteps of the pioneers who came before them.

K2 Base Camp is located in the Karakoram Range of Pakistan, accessible primarily from the city of Skardu. First, fly into Islamabad International Airport, the main international gateway. From Islamabad, take a domestic flight to Skardu Airport. From Skardu, you will embark on a multi-day trek, typically starting from the village of Askole. This trek can take around 10-14 days depending on weather conditions and your pace.

Transportation in the region is a mix of air travel, road travel, and trekking. Domestic flights from Islamabad to Skardu are the quickest way to reach the starting point of the trek. In Skardu, 4x4 jeeps are commonly used to navigate the rugged terrain to reach Askole. From Askole, all travel is on foot, and porters are available to help carry gear. Trekking is the only way to reach K2 Base Camp from this point onward.

The official currency in Pakistan is the Pakistani Rupee (PKR). Credit cards are not widely accepted in remote areas like Skardu and Askole, so it is essential to carry enough cash for your journey. ATMs are available in Skardu but may not always be reliable. It is advisable to withdraw sufficient cash in Islamabad. Exchange rates at local money changers in Skardu may not be as favorable as those in larger cities.

While the trek to K2 Base Camp is generally safe, it involves high-altitude trekking, which carries inherent risks. It is crucial to be well-prepared and to acclimatize properly. Skardu and Askole are relatively safe, but standard precautions should be taken. Avoid traveling alone at night and keep a close watch on your belongings. Always check current travel advisories and register your trip with your embassy if required. There are no specific high-crime areas targeting tourists, but staying vigilant is always best.

In case of an emergency, the first thing to do is to contact your trekking guide or expedition leader. Have a satellite phone or a reliable communication device, as mobile networks may not be available. For medical emergencies, the nearest hospital is in Skardu. It is crucial to have comprehensive travel insurance that includes high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation. Emergency services can be contacted via local authorities and the Pakistan Army, who often assist in rescue operations in the region.
