Car
If you are traveling by car, start your journey in Trujillo, the largest city in North Coast Peru. From Trujillo, take the Pan-American Highway (Carretera Panamericana) south towards Lima. After approximately 250 km, take the exit towards Huamachuco / Cajabamba (Route 3N). Continue on this road for about 140 km until you reach Huamachuco. From Huamachuco, follow the signs towards the town of Marcara, and then continue towards the town of Cachicadán. After passing through Cachicadán, follow the road heading towards the Andes, finally leading you to the Salcantay area. Ensure your vehicle is suitable for mountainous terrain as the roads can be rough. This trip will take around 8-10 hours depending on traffic and road conditions.
Public Transportation
To reach Salcantay by public transportation, start in Trujillo. Head to the local bus terminal (Terminal Terrestre) and look for buses heading to Huamachuco. The bus ride will take approximately 5-6 hours. Once in Huamachuco, you will need to find a collectivo (shared taxi) or local bus that can take you to Marcara. This leg of the journey may take an additional 2-3 hours. From Marcara, you can arrange for a local taxi or transport service to take you closer to Salcantay, as public transport may not go directly to the site. Be prepared for an additional cost for this private transport, which could range from 30 to 50 soles depending on distance and negotiation.
Use Salcantay as your starting point for nearby food, family ideas, nightlife, and more local discoveries.
