Yawgoo Valley lies in the inland south-east of Rhode Island, a region whose rolling terrain and scattered wetlands were strongly shaped by the last Ice Age. Glacial deposits, shallow valleys and forested uplands helped create the varied relief that later made small-scale winter recreation possible. The area’s earlier human history belongs to the wider landscape of Indigenous Narragansett territory, followed by colonial settlement and the development of farms, woodland and rural roads across Exeter. The ski area is therefore part of a long transition from a working countryside to a mixed landscape where conservation, residential growth and outdoor recreation coexist.

Exeter was incorporated in 1742 and developed as an inland agricultural community rather than a port or industrial centre. Its dispersed farms, forests and waterways distinguish it from Rhode Island’s denser coastal towns. For much of its history, local livelihoods were connected with farming, timber and small-scale rural enterprise, while nearby Kingston and West Kingston provided important transport and institutional connections. The quiet character of Exeter later became an advantage for recreational development: wooded land and rolling ground could support a destination close to population centres without being absorbed into an urban resort.

Yawgoo Valley began operating as a ski area in 1965, when smaller local hills across the north-eastern United States were becoming important gateways to skiing for families who did not live near major mountain resorts. Its location made day visits feasible from Providence and other Rhode Island communities, while its modest scale suited beginners and recreational users. Over time, surface lifts, snowmaking and instructional facilities helped the area function as a practical local ski centre. The slopes remain closely associated with accessible winter recreation rather than long-distance mountain tourism.

The addition of summer water attractions broadened Yawgoo Valley’s seasonal role and gave the property a second identity beyond skiing. This shift reflects a wider pattern in New England, where smaller winter facilities have sought complementary warm-weather uses and more varied family programming. Today, winter skiing, snowboarding and tubing alternate with summer water-park activity, while the surrounding Exeter landscape retains its rural character. The result is a recreation business shaped as much by Rhode Island’s local population and changing weather as by traditional ski-resort culture.
