Rânca is reached primarily by road via Novaci and the southern section of the Transalpina, designated DN67C. A Parâng Mountain Landscape

Rânca lies within the Parâng Mountains, part of Romania’s Southern Carpathians, whose rounded high ridges and deeply cut valleys were shaped by long geological processes and later glacial and periglacial activity. The landscape has traditionally been used less for dense permanent settlement than for seasonal grazing, forestry and movement across the mountains. Its open uplands, spruce forests and high passes remain central to the character of the resort, while the steep transition from the Novaci foothills to the alpine road explains both its scenic appeal and its demanding weather.

Pastoral Routes and Novaci

Before Rânca became a resort, the surrounding mountains were associated with pastoral life and transhumance, the seasonal movement of sheep between lowland and upland grazing. Novaci developed as the principal settlement and gateway on the southern side of the Parâng route, with local livelihoods shaped by farming, forestry and mountain trade. The Transalpina Road

The high road now known as the Transalpina follows an old mountain crossing linking southern Transylvania with Oltenia.
