Vaslui County has no major international airport. The nearest significant air gateway is Iași International Airport, outside the county, from which Vaslui and the eastern part of the county can be reached by road or rail. Rail services connect Vaslui, Bârlad and Huși with wider Moldavian routes, although connections and journey times should be checked before departure. History of Vaslui

Prehistoric and Ancient Settlement

The territory of present-day Vaslui County has been occupied since prehistoric times, and archaeological research has identified settlements and artefacts belonging to several cultures of prehistoric and ancient eastern Europe. Neolithic and Bronze Age communities farmed the river valleys and plateaux, while later populations used the region’s position between the Carpathians and the Prut corridor. Finds associated with the Sântana de Mureș–Chernyakhiv cultural horizon demonstrate the area’s participation in wider exchanges during late antiquity. Museums in Vaslui and Bârlad preserve material that helps place local communities within the larger archaeological history of Moldavia.

The Formation of Medieval Moldavia

During the medieval formation of the Principality of Moldavia, the valleys and market settlements of what is now Vaslui County became part of a political landscape linking the Carpathian passes with the Prut and lower Danube. Vaslui and Bârlad developed as administrative and commercial centres, while Huși grew in importance as a settlement associated with the eastern part of the principality. The region’s position made it valuable for agriculture, movement and defence, and it later became closely connected with the campaigns of Moldavian princes against Ottoman expansion.

The Battle of Vaslui, 1475

On 10 January 1475, Stephen the Great of Moldavia defeated a much larger Ottoman army at Podul Înalt, near present-day Băcăoani, west of Vaslui. The battle took place in marshy and foggy conditions that favoured the Moldavian forces and became one of the most important victories in Stephen’s long resistance to Ottoman pressure. Contemporary European observers regarded the result as significant beyond Moldavia because it temporarily checked an important Ottoman campaign. The monument at the battlefield and the historical interpretation in Vaslui preserve the event as a central part of the county’s identity.

Churches, Monasteries and Episcopal Huși

Religious foundations played a major role in shaping the cultural landscape of Vaslui County. Rulers, boyars and bishops supported churches and monasteries that served as places of worship, education and land management. Huși became the seat of an Orthodox diocese in the sixteenth century, strengthening its ecclesiastical importance and giving the town a distinctive cathedral and episcopal presence. Rural monasteries and parish churches continued to preserve Moldavian building traditions through periods of political change, even when many original structures were altered or rebuilt.

Trade, Vineyards and Nineteenth-Century Modernisation

In the nineteenth century, the towns of Vaslui, Bârlad and Huși were reshaped by the administrative and economic reforms that followed the unification of Moldavia and Wallachia in 1859 and the creation of modern Romania. Bârlad expanded as an educational and commercial centre, while Huși’s vineyards supported a regional wine economy and associated trade. Improved roads, postal links and railway development gradually connected the county more closely with Iași, Tecuci and the wider national market. War, Communism and the Post-1989 Transition

The twentieth century brought military mobilisation, political upheaval and major changes to landholding and village life. The two world wars affected families and transport networks, while the communist period reorganised agriculture through collectivisation and expanded state industry in the larger towns.
