Getting There

  • Car

    From Cyangugu, head northeast on the N3 road towards Kibuye. Continue for approximately 35 km until you reach the junction near Rubavu. Take the exit onto the Rutsiro Road (Rutsiro District) and follow the signs for Gishwati-Mukura National Park. The park entrance is about 10 km from the junction. Make sure to have a map or GPS handy, as some local signage may not be very clear. Parking facilities are available at the park entrance.

  • Public Transportation

    Start your journey from the main bus terminal in Cyangugu. Take a bus heading to Kibuye, which typically runs every hour. The bus journey will take around 1 hour. Upon reaching Kibuye, look for a local minibus (matatu) heading towards Rutsiro. Inform the driver that your destination is Gishwati-Mukura National Park. The minibus will drop you off at the nearest point to the park, approximately 10 km away from the park entrance. You may need to hire a motorcycle taxi (moto) or walk to get to the entrance from there.

  • Motorcycle Taxi

    If you prefer a quicker option, you can hire a motorcycle taxi from Cyangugu to Gishwati-Mukura National Park. Agree on the fare beforehand; it should be around RWF 5,000 to RWF 7,000 depending on negotiation and distance. The ride will take approximately 30-40 minutes. Ensure that the motorcycle taxi is licensed and that you wear a helmet for safety.

  • Hiking

    For the more adventurous tourists, once you reach the nearest point to Gishwati-Mukura National Park via public transportation, you could opt to hike the remaining distance. The hike is about 10 km and can take 2 to 3 hours depending on your pace. Make sure to wear appropriate hiking shoes and bring water. Follow the signs towards the park and enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way!
