Car
If you are traveling by car, you can start your journey from Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda. Head west on the RN1 highway towards Musanze. The drive takes approximately 2-3 hours, depending on traffic. Once you arrive in Musanze, follow the signs to the Volcanoes National Park. The entrance to the park is located about 30 minutes from Musanze town. Upon entering the park, you will need to pay an entrance fee (approximately $50 per person) and hire a local guide, which is mandatory, to assist you on your trek to Mount Karisimbi.
Public Transportation
To reach Mount Karisimbi using public transportation, first take a bus from Kigali to Musanze. The bus ride takes around 2-3 hours and costs approximately $5. Upon arrival in Musanze, you can take a motorcycle taxi (known as 'moto') to the Volcanoes National Park entrance, which will cost around $2-$3. At the park entrance, you will need to pay an entrance fee of about $50 per person and secure a local guide to accompany you to Mount Karisimbi.
Hiking
After entering the Volcanoes National Park, you will embark on a guided hike to Mount Karisimbi. The trek to the summit is challenging and typically takes about 6-8 hours to reach the top, depending on your fitness level. The guide will lead you along marked trails, and it's advisable to wear sturdy hiking boots and carry water, snacks, and a light jacket, as temperatures can drop at higher elevations.
