Car
If you are driving from Kigali, take the RN4 road heading northwest towards Musanze. The journey is approximately 2-3 hours depending on traffic. Once you reach Musanze, follow the signs to Kinigi. From Kinigi, continue on the road until you reach the turn-off for the Volcanoes National Park entrance. After entering the park, you will need to pay an entrance fee, which is approximately $50 for foreign visitors. After paying, follow the signs to Visoke point d’arrivé randonnée, which is located at the coordinates GFQQ+GG, Kinigi. Ensure your vehicle is suitable for mountain roads.
Public Transportation
From Kigali, take a bus to Musanze. Buses leave frequently from the Nyabugogo bus station and the fare is about 1,500 RWF (approximately $1.50). Upon arrival in Musanze, you can hire a motorcycle taxi (also referred to as an 'moto') to Kinigi. The fare for the moto ride is around 2,000 RWF (about $2) and will take about 30 minutes. Once in Kinigi, you will need to arrange transportation to the entrance of Volcanoes National Park, which may be included in your hiking tour package or can be arranged locally. Expect to pay an additional entrance fee of around $50.
Hiking
If you are already in the vicinity of the Volcanoes National Park and have hiked to nearby areas, you can reach Visoke point d’arrivé randonnée on foot. Make sure to have a local guide who is familiar with the trails, as they can help navigate the terrain. The hike can take several hours depending on your pace and the trail conditions. Ensure you are well-prepared with water, snacks, and proper hiking gear.
