Lagoa Azul belongs to São Tomé’s volcanic island landscape, formed through successive eruptions and later shaped by erosion, rainfall and the Atlantic Ocean. The dark rock around the coast contrasts with the clear, shallow water that gives the lagoon its name. This geological setting is part of the island’s broader volcanic character, visible in its rugged shorelines, forested mountains and isolated rock formations. Lagoa Azul is therefore best understood not as a constructed lake but as a coastal natural feature whose appearance results from the meeting of volcanic land and tropical sea.

The north-western coast developed within São Tomé’s wider history of Portuguese plantation agriculture. From the colonial period onwards, sugar and later cocoa and coffee shaped settlement, transport routes and the island’s economy, while roças, or plantation estates, became important centres of work and administration. The area around Lagoa Azul is connected to this northern plantation landscape, although the lagoon itself is primarily a natural attraction. Nearby villages and roads reflect the continuing relationship between communities, agricultural land and the coast, while former plantation buildings elsewhere in the region provide reminders of the island’s colonial past and post-independence changes.

The lighthouse at Lagoa Azul became a practical maritime landmark along São Tomé’s north-western coast, helping to give the site a cultural identity as well as a scenic one. Its presence reflects the importance of the surrounding Atlantic waters to navigation and island life, even though the lagoon is now chiefly visited for its landscape and marine setting. The lighthouse, coastal road and volcanic shore together form a small historic-natural ensemble, linking modern visitors with the maritime infrastructure established during São Tomé’s period of Portuguese administration.

São Tomé and Príncipe became independent in 1975, after which former plantation systems, rural communities and public infrastructure entered a new national period. Lagoa Azul remained a lightly developed coastal attraction rather than becoming a large resort, and its value continues to rest on scenery, access and the surrounding environment. Contemporary visits are commonly part of island tours that connect beaches, villages, plantation heritage and viewpoints. The modest scale of development makes responsible behaviour particularly important: visitors should avoid littering, respect local communities and observe marine and coastal conditions rather than treating the site as an intensively managed amusement area.
