Getting There

  • Car

    If you are driving from Custer State Park Campground, head northeast on SD-87 N for approximately 3 miles. Turn right onto the access road for Sylvan Lake, which is well-marked. Continue along this road until you reach the Sylvan Lake parking area. The Black Elk Peak Trailhead is located at the far end of the parking lot. Note that parking may incur a fee of $20 for a daily pass to Custer State Park.

    From the Custer State Park Visitor Center, take SD-36 E for about 5 miles. Turn left onto SD-87 N. Follow the signs to Sylvan Lake. Upon arrival, park in the designated parking area. This area may have a daily parking fee.

  • Public Transportation

    If you are using public transportation, check for shuttle services operating in Custer State Park. The closest shuttle drop-off point is at the Sylvan Lake Lodge. From the lodge, you can walk approximately 0.5 miles to the Black Elk Peak Trailhead, following the signs along the scenic path.
