Car
If you are traveling by car, start your journey from the nearest major town, which is Cangas de Onís. Head west on the N-625 road. After approximately 15 km, you will reach the junction for the AS-114 road towards Arenas de Cabrales. Turn onto AS-114 and drive for about 12 km until you reach the village of Poncebos. From Poncebos, you will need to park your car at the designated parking area, which may charge a fee of around €5 for the day. From here, you will proceed on foot.
Hiking
After parking in Poncebos, follow the well-marked trail leading to Bulnes, which is about a 2.5-hour hike. The path is steep and may require good walking shoes. As you ascend, you'll enjoy stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Upon reaching Bulnes, you will find signs directing you towards El Castillo, a historic site located in the village.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, take a bus from Cangas de Onís to Arenas de Cabrales. The bus service operates several times a day, and the fare is approximately €3. From Arenas de Cabrales, you can catch a local bus or taxi to Poncebos. Alternatively, if you prefer, you can take a taxi directly from Cangas de Onís to Poncebos, which may cost around €30-€40. Once at Poncebos, follow the hiking trail as mentioned above.
Cable Car
In addition to hiking, there is a cable car service operating from Poncebos to Bulnes. This option allows you to skip the hike if you prefer a quicker ascent. The cable car ride takes about 8 minutes and costs around €18 for a round trip. Once you arrive at Bulnes, you can then make your way to El Castillo on foot.
