Getting There

  • Walking

    If you are in the central area of Anuradhapura, you can start at the Sri Maha Bodhi tree, a prominent landmark. From there, head north along the main road (Maha Vihara Mawatha) for approximately 1 kilometer. You will pass several shops and small eateries, so it’s a great opportunity to grab a snack if you wish. Continue straight until you reach the intersection with the Jethawanarama Road (also marked with signs). Turn left onto Jethawanarama Road and walk for about 500 meters. You will see the Jethawanarama Uposathaghara on your right side, marked by a large stupa and well-maintained gardens.

  • Bicycle

    Rent a bicycle from one of the local shops in Anuradhapura. Start at the Ruwanwelisaya, another famous stupa. From there, cycle south on the Ruwanweli Maha Seya Road for about 1.5 kilometers until you reach the entrance to the Jethawanarama complex, which will be on your left. It's a straight route, and you can enjoy the scenic views of other historical sites along the way.

  • Tuk-Tuk

    For a more comfortable journey, you can hire a tuk-tuk. Simply tell the driver that you want to go to Jethawanarama Uposathaghara. Most drivers are familiar with it. If you're starting from the city center, the ride should take around 10 minutes, depending on traffic. The fare should be negotiated beforehand, but it generally should not exceed 300 LKR. The tuk-tuk will drop you off right at the entrance.

  • Public Transport (Bus)

    If you prefer using public transport, you can take a local bus that heads towards the Anuradhapura archaeological sites. Board the bus at the main bus stand in Anuradhapura and ask the conductor to drop you off at Jethawanarama. The bus ride will take around 15 minutes. Once you get off, walk back a few meters to the entrance of the Uposathaghara. Buses are frequent, but check the schedule for the latest timings.
