Car
If you're traveling by car from Kandy, head east on the A26 road. Continue for approximately 20 kilometers until you reach the turn-off for the Knuckles Mountain Range. Follow the signs towards 'Knuckles' or 'Rattota'. The drive will take around 45 minutes. Once you arrive at the entrance to the Knuckles region, you may need to pay a small fee for entry, typically around 200 LKR per person. Parking is available at the starting point of the hike.
Public Transportation
To reach the Knuckles Mountain Range via public transport, take a bus from Kandy to Rattota. Buses leave frequently from the Kandy bus station and take about an hour. After arriving in Rattota, you may need to hire a tuk-tuk or a taxi to the starting point of the hike, which should cost around 500-1000 LKR. Ensure that you discuss the fare beforehand to avoid misunderstandings. The starting point is well-known among local drivers.
Trekking from the Entrance
Once you've arrived at the starting point for the Knuckles Hike, you'll find a marked trailhead. Ensure you have a good map or GPS device as the trails can be confusing. The hike typically takes 4-6 hours depending on your pace and the specific route chosen. It's recommended to carry sufficient water, snacks, and a first-aid kit. Remember to check the local weather before starting your hike, as conditions can change rapidly in the mountains.
